<p><strong>Winemaker&#8217;s Notes:</strong>  Rich garnet color goes perfectly with the holiday season and it&#8217;s aromas of toasted hazelnut and winter spices make this wine the perfect gift for anyone on your list.</p>
<p><strong>My Review:</strong>  Another of the bottles that I received just before the end of the year, and on an unseasonable warm day on Sunday (pushing 70 in Virginia? Really?) my wife and I decided to throw a couple of steaks on the grill and a bottle of red wine sounded like the perfect pairing.</p>
<p>While there are some violet streaks going through the wine, it was a nice deep red in the glass and I picked up aromas of spice and dark berry. In the mouth there was a ton of fruit, but it was by no means a &#8220;fruit bomb&#8221;. By that I mean there was plenty of body and depth to the wine that allowed the wine to present nuanced fruit flavors and have a bit of complexity and a medium-smooth finish.</p>
<p><span id="more-1581"></span>Paired with some steaks, baked potatoes, and asparagus it was great. The body of the wine held up to the steak and the fruit flavors managed to go well with the veggies (potatoes are a vegetable dammit). What I really liked about the wine is that even with the body to hold up to the steak, the fruit flavors were dominant enough to make the wine enjoyable all by itself.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Odds are pretty good that while in your wine shop you&#8217;ve seen wine labeled as table wine. What does that mean though? Is it a generic term or are there requirements? What&#8217;s a good use of table wines and how do you pick one out? Can things not labeled as &#8220;table wine&#8221; be used for the purpose?</p>
<p><strong>What Is Table Wine?</strong></p>
<p>Depending on where you live table wine can mean a lot of different things. Here in the United States it&#8217;s a wine made from grapes with a maximum alcohol by volume content of 14%. Other than that there&#8217;s not much that determines what is or isn&#8217;t a table wine and it&#8217;s somewhat left up to the vineyard or winery to determine whether or not they want to label their wine as a table wine.</p>
<p>In Europe the standards are a bit more stringent with different categories of table wine existing within the overall &#8220;table wine&#8221; genre.</p>
<p><strong><span id="more-1572"></span>Picking Out Table Wines</strong></p>
<p>Regardless of the standards for what can or can&#8217;t be labeled as a &#8220;table wine&#8221;, for most of us it&#8217;s a wine that we keep around the house to go with everything from pizza and pasta to chicken and munchies. Be it red or white, for many of us a table wine is an inexpensive wine that we pick up at the store that won&#8217;t set the world on fire, won&#8217;t change the way you feel about a grape or varietal, but instead goes with a wide range of foods or no foods at all.</p>
<p>While only you can determine what your personal standard for a table wine is, it wouldn&#8217;t be fair if I didn&#8217;t at least share what I look for in a table wine for my wife and I. There&#8217;s not a particular grape that I look for, though I do find myself gravitating to pinot noir and malbec as of late for reds and sauvignon blanc for whites, especially those from Chile.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t have a set price, and every person&#8217;s budget will dictate what&#8217;s an &#8220;affordable&#8221; wine for them, but I do attempt to keep it under $20 a bottle. Lately I&#8217;ve even found bottles at my local grocery store for under $10 that are enjoyable and are perfect for a Sunday afternoon while watching football on the couch.</p>
<p><strong>It&#8217;s Your Choice</strong></p>
<p>The only opinion that matters when it comes to picking out a table wine is your own. If you enjoy the bottle pick up several bottles of it, keep it around your house, and enjoy a glass or two with a quick dinner, after a hard day at work, or because&#8230;wine is awesome. The most important part is that even after you&#8217;ve found a table wine that you like, to be open to trying new ones since a little variety certainly never hurts.</p>

<p><strong>Winemaker&#8217;s Notes:</strong>   The wine has a smooth texture and sweet, red fruit character that distinguishes California&#8217;s finest Cabernet Sauvignons, along with smoky oak, vanilla, and roasted nut accents to invigorate the palate and provide a lengthy finish. Enjoy with standing rib roasts, grilled steak, roast duck, spareribs, lasagna, or flavorful hard cheeses.</p>
<p><strong>My Review:</strong>  An evening where my wife was out and I was home alone with the dog to fend for myself on dinner usually only means one thing &#8211; steak, a baked potato, and a bottle of red wine to be enjoyed. There are worse ways to spend an evening. I&#8217;d been sitting on this sample until I could get around to cooking up a steak, and as tends to be the case, I&#8217;m glad I did.</p>
<p><span id="more-1541"></span>There&#8217;s a line where a line goes from having good fruit to being a fruit bomb. Don&#8217;t ask me exactly where that line is, because I think that it&#8217;s different for every wine, but the 2010 Robert Mondavi Private Selection Cabernet Sauvignon did a good job of walking the line between fruity and fruit bomb.</p>
<p>On the nose I got dark fruit notes with a touch of roundness to it. In the mouth I got plenty of nice tart fruit, with raspberry and some blueberry being the most prevalent to me. The finish on the wine was surprisingly smooth, though with the extra varietals blended in that should come as less of a surprise than it was.</p>
<p>Paired with a ribeye I picked up at the local store it was a nice simple wine that didn&#8217;t try and do too much, but was more than adequate before, during, and after the meal. As value wines go, particularly for a California Cabernet, this is a good choice if you&#8217;re looking for something that&#8217;s easy to drink, and will make a good choice as a red wine option during the holiday party season thanks to the price.</p>

<p><strong>Winemaker&#8217;s Notes:</strong>  This Big House Red lives up to that old Fruit Bomb moniker that you&#8217;ve come to expect. It starts with a nose full of blackberries and raspberries, with hints of leather and spices. The palate is clean, exhibiting flavors of cranberries, roses, and a touch of rhubarb. This finish lingers, with flavors of vanilla and a touch of dark cherries in the finish. Pairs well with all grilled meats, lasagna Bolognese, grilled vegetables, or even sashimi grade Ahi tuna.</p>
<p><strong>My Review:  </strong>The previous version of this wine was one of those that I was torn on. I liked what they were trying to do by creating a table wine with a little bit of everything that could then go with a little bit of everything, but I felt that the attempt created a wine that just fell flat. This vintage was different.</p>
<p><span id="more-1533"></span>Now, to preface, I&#8217;m not saying that the 2010 Big House Red is some revolutionary wine, but I did like it better than the previous years bottles I had tried. They&#8217;ve changed the mixture some and I think it&#8217;s for the best. On the nose I got mostly raspberry with a touch of spice and in the mouth I got dark cherry and some cranberry with a juiciness that made me feel like the Zinfandel as much as anything was coming through.</p>
<p>With a dinner of pizza after a trip the grocery store to stock up after the Thanksgiving holiday, a simple bottle of inexpensive red was a welcome sight and I continue to be a proponent of what Big House is doing &#8211; making nice affordable wines that might not set the world on fire, but are certainly welcome after a long day at work.</p>

On the nose, lovely rose petal, violet, and red cherry aromas mingle with complementary scents of smoky vanilla and nutmeg. Very soft and round with good length and richness on the palate, the wine displays supple, silky berry and cherry jam flavors. Enjoy this delectable Pinot Noir with grilled salmon, herb-roasted chicken, baked ham, or lighter pork dishes.</p>
<p><strong>My Review:</strong>  So remember yesterday when I talked about the bottle of 2007 Biltmore Blanc de Blancs exploding all over my kitchen? Well, since my wife and I were making salmon to go with that, and since exploding wine meant I was <em>really</em> going to need a drink, we decided to open up this bottle of 2010 Robert Mondavi Pinot Noir that I had received as a sample.</p>
<p><span id="more-1522"></span>A light to medium red in the glass, with hints of some rust coloring, I got aromas of cherry and spice on the nose which lead into a very smooth, almost juicy wine with flavors of berry and a touch of a cola finish that I&#8217;m finding more and more on Pinot, and that I&#8217;m finding myself enjoying quite a bit.</p>
<p>Paired with the salmon the wines richness was a nice compliment to the fatty fish, making the entire meal just a wonderful, rich experience. For the price this was a surprisingly robust Pinot Noir, and if you&#8217;re looking for a budget wine to put out with your Thanksgiving dinner, this is certainly a good choice.</p>

<p><strong>Winemaker&#8217;s Notes:</strong>  Big House wines are a rebellious mix of non-traditional grape varieties destined to give the imbiber a new experience. To wit this year&#8217;s prisoner is a captivating blend of aromatic whites that span the distance of the Alps themselves. With a nose that carries the vibrancy of spring and white flowers and lychee fruit that surround the senses. The palate opens up to tropical fruits, dried apricot, and white peaches. This wine finishes strong with a cleansing citrus zest that lingers. Pairs with fresh fish, Asian cuisine, or even Sunday morning fruit salads.</p>
<p><strong>My Review:</strong>  I&#8217;m a big proponent of tables wines, and I feel as though that&#8217;s a niche that Big House wines has embraced and possibly even tried to make their own. Looking at the list of wines that are put into the bottle it&#8217;s almost disappointing to not see one labeled &#8220;kitchen sink&#8221;. There are times when a wine can try and do too much and end up falling flat, and while I&#8217;m not going to go so far as to proclaim the 2010 Big House White an amazing wine, for a $10 table wine, you can do a lot worse.</p>
<p><span id="more-1510"></span>On the nose I didn&#8217;t get much, though some of the white flower aroma did come through. In the mouth there were competing flavors of citrus and honeysuckle and dried apricot that gave this just overarching tropical fruit flavor that was light and somewhat refreshing. Paired with a dinner of chicken and cheesy potatoes the wine was a nice counterpoint to the bit of heat that was in the seasoning on the chicken and to the thickness of the potatoes.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d be lying if I said this was a life-altering wine, but as $10 white table wines go, it&#8217;s average at worst. If you&#8217;re looking for a light white wine with tropical notes and a hint of some of the sweeter varietals you&#8217;d be remiss to at least not consider the 2010 Big House White.</p>

<p><strong>My Review:</strong>  Around this time of year I start getting samples offered with Thanksgiving and Christmas not too far away. I have to say that this is the first year of writing this website that I was offered a sample for Halloween. I&#8217;d seen the various bottles of wine on shelves that were obviously trying to appeal either to the Halloween drinking crowd or goth kids too stupid to buy something that didn&#8217;t have a vampire or other creature of the night, but I&#8217;d never picked one up myself, so when I was offered a sample of the 2009 Apothic Red with Halloween coming up, I was interested since I&#8217;ve never really done a Halloween feature on here.</p>
<p><span id="more-1498"></span>First of all, a talk about themed wines &#8211; in general, I don&#8217;t buy into them. That&#8217;s not to say that I don&#8217;t appreciate a cleverly named or labelled bottle that is appropriate for a specific event, but when planning my wine offerings for an event, I try not to limit myself to what&#8217;s on the label and more to what&#8217;s in the bottle to make sure it suits what food is out and also the crowd that will be drinking it.</p>
<p>Now, all of that being said, if I was going to put out a themed bottle of wine for a Halloween party, I could do a lot worse than the 2009 Apothic Red. Nice and dark and purple in the glass with aromas of berry and a touch of spice, in the mouth I got mostly dark, juicy fruit and a cola finish that was smooth. Like really smooth. Like this may be the smoothest finish to a wine I&#8217;ve ever  had.</p>
<p>This wine was incredibly easy to drink, and will appeal to most palates in a non-critical wine drinking environment (read: drinking without paying much attention to what you&#8217;re drinking). There&#8217;s nothing particularly fancy about the wine, but I didn&#8217;t find it disappointing in any way, and it went well enough with a couple of frozen pizzas that my wife and I cooked up, something I imagine would be offered up at Halloween parties this weekend.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a themed bottle of wine to put out for your Halloween party, I can honestly say I&#8217;d go with this one. <p><strong>My Review:</strong>  More Syrah? Yep, that&#8217;s really happening. Another night without the wife being home meant another steak found its fate on my grill, which called for another bottle of big red wine. The Slammer Syrah from Big House had been looking at me funny for a few weeks, so I decided to give in and twist open its screwcap to see what all was going on in there.</p>
<p><span id="more-1462"></span>A hint of purple was present in the glass, though not as much as previous Syrahs I had tried, and on the nose I got blackberry and notes of spice that I was expecting, though that didn&#8217;t make them any less enjoyable. Sipping on the wine brought forward nice juicy cassis notes and a meaty note on the finish that I&#8217;m finding I like more every time I find it.</p>
<p>Paired with my steak it was great, adding a touch of smoke to the grilled meat and the meaty finish going great with the actual meat. I would have liked to try this with some BBQ burgers as I think the tangyness of the sauce would be a great compliment to the wine as well.</p>
<p>Big House has once again offered up a wine that isn&#8217;t ground breaking, but also isn&#8217;t a disappointment. It&#8217;s a great value, and definitely one to look at for these last few days of using the grill before the weather permanently turns cold.</p>

<p><strong>Winemaker&#8217;s Notes:</strong>  The 2009 Crimson &amp; Clover Conservancy is a velvety blend of signature Livermore varietal. Aromas of currant, clove, and vanilla lead into bright fruit flavors of blackberry on the palate. The spicy finish is soft and long with hints of leather and tobacco. Pairs well with black pepper-crusted filet mignon with goat cheese or grilled artichoke with tarragon aioli.</p>
<p><strong>My Review:</strong>  Given as how during my upcoming trip to San Francisco (we leave tomorrow and this day can&#8217;t end quick enough) I plan to visit Concannon Vineyards, I wanted to try the 2009 Crimson &amp; Clover before heading out to avoid any awkward silences in regards to the bottle of wine sitting lonely at my home back in Virginia.</p>
<p>With Labor Day weekend upon us my wife and I knew we would be grilling, so in between getting laundry done and bags packed for our vacation, we threw a couple of steaks and lobster tails on the grill. Well, rather, we tried to, but then the grill ran out of gas and so we had to finish them inside using the oven. It all still worked out, especially when paired with the wine.</p>
<p><span id="more-1393"></span>In the glass the 2009 Crimson &amp; Clover was dark, though not so dark as to not let light through. On the nose I got a bit of dark fruit and a hint of spice. In the mouth there was an explosion of berry flavor, with juicy blackberry jumping right to the front.</p>
<p>While I didn&#8217;t pick up a ton of spice on the finish, there were hints, and the finish definitely lingers on for a bit, something I enjoy in my red wines. Paired with the steaks and lobster it was a good, with the juicy fruit flavors complimenting the steaks that at least had a little grill flavor to them thanks to at least getting seared before the propane tank ran out.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve yet to have a bad experience with the Concannon wines I&#8217;ve been sent, and part of what continues to attract me to them is that they are quality wines at a great price point. This is a good value wine to enjoy as we wrap up the summer and the grilling season, and is a nice tribute by John Concannon to his father Jim, the &#8220;Father of America&#8217;s First Petite Sirah&#8221;.</p>

<p>If you were paying attention during the 2011 North American Wine Bloggers Conference (and if you weren&#8217;t I&#8217;m deeply hurt), you&#8217;d have noticed that I did do a small tasting during one of the speed tastings of the CalNaturale Chardonnay. I was intrigued by it, especially being that it&#8217;s a boxed wine, so when they reached out to me after the conference and asked if I&#8217;d like full-sized samples I jumped at the opportunity.</p>
<p>First, a few things about the wines before I launch into my usual reviews. These wines are about as organic as you can get, with the grapes being grown organically and the tetra-packs used to ship them in reducing costs and being far more green than a bottle holding the same amount of juice. I know that &#8220;boxed wines&#8221; have this bad reputation, but I think both myself and a lot of other bloggers are starting to see the value in them, and the winemakers are starting to make really good, quality wines and packing them in non-traditional ways, so it&#8217;s good to see another non-bottled wine on the market.</p>
<p>Ok, now to the reviews.</p>
<p><strong><span id="more-1371"></span>CalNaturale Cabernet Sauvignon</strong></p>

<p><strong>Winemaker&#8217;s Notes:</strong>   The initial release of CalNaturale Caberenet Sauvignon shows very rich, ripe fruit with flavors of ripe plum, cherries, cassis, and a hint of toasty oak. This classic wine is full-bodied, yet very approachable, with solid structure and ample tannins.</p>
<p><strong>My Review:</strong>  I&#8217;m always tentative going into a California Cabernet Sauvignon, just because I don&#8217;t know how much fruit to expect and at a certain point, enough is enough. The CalNaturale did have good ripe flavors of plum and cherry, and while I don&#8217;t know that I would call it full-bodied, it also wasn&#8217;t quite medium-bodied either. Husky-bodied maybe? My wife and I tried this wine with a few different things, including pasta (which is was a nice pairing for), just out on the deck one evening, and I even turned some into Sangria for my wife, which it actually performed admirably as.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s quickly becoming a preponderance of quality California Cabernet Sauvignon in boxes, and part of what I liked about the CalNaturale is that they offer 500ml and 1L instead of the usual 3L option, which is perfect for smaller groups or for travel. For the price it&#8217;s a great value, and I liked that it was a bit more versatile than I was expecting.</p>
<p><strong>CalNaturale Chardonnay</strong></p>

<p><strong>Winemaker&#8217;s Notes:</strong>   This refreshing Chardonnay shows clear and vibrant fruit with a hint of vanilla from lightly toasted oak. It has medium acidity with good length and shows fruit to the very end. Ideal with or without food; well balanced with aromas and taste of ripe apples, pear, and a hint of citrus.</p>
<p><strong>My Review:</strong>  I had gotten a brief taste of this at the conference, so I was very interested to spend more time with it as my notes seemed to indicate that I had enjoyed it (all blurs together at a certain point). I liked this one more than my wife, as there was too much oak on it for her taste, whereas I liked how there was some oak, but not so much that I couldn&#8217;t enjoy it without food.</p>
<p>Again, we paired this with several foods, including some fish and chicken, as well as just out on the deck one evening. I liked that the acid was there, but not overwhelming, and the nice apple and pear flavors blending into the soft oak finish with a touch of vanilla.</p>
<p>Of the two this was my favorite, in part because the warmer weather here in Virginia makes a good white wine a must have. It&#8217;s a great value and one I&#8217;d recommend checking out, especially if you&#8217;re looking to stay organic as much as possible.</p>
