<p><strong>Winemaker&#8217;s Notes:</strong>   The wine has a smooth texture and sweet, red fruit character that distinguishes California&#8217;s finest Cabernet Sauvignons, along with smoky oak, vanilla, and roasted nut accents to invigorate the palate and provide a lengthy finish. Enjoy with standing rib roasts, grilled steak, roast duck, spareribs, lasagna, or flavorful hard cheeses.</p>
<p><strong>My Review:</strong>  An evening where my wife was out and I was home alone with the dog to fend for myself on dinner usually only means one thing &#8211; steak, a baked potato, and a bottle of red wine to be enjoyed. There are worse ways to spend an evening. I&#8217;d been sitting on this sample until I could get around to cooking up a steak, and as tends to be the case, I&#8217;m glad I did.</p>
<p><span id="more-1541"></span>There&#8217;s a line where a line goes from having good fruit to being a fruit bomb. Don&#8217;t ask me exactly where that line is, because I think that it&#8217;s different for every wine, but the 2010 Robert Mondavi Private Selection Cabernet Sauvignon did a good job of walking the line between fruity and fruit bomb.</p>
<p>On the nose I got dark fruit notes with a touch of roundness to it. In the mouth I got plenty of nice tart fruit, with raspberry and some blueberry being the most prevalent to me. The finish on the wine was surprisingly smooth, though with the extra varietals blended in that should come as less of a surprise than it was.</p>
<p>Paired with a ribeye I picked up at the local store it was a nice simple wine that didn&#8217;t try and do too much, but was more than adequate before, during, and after the meal. As value wines go, particularly for a California Cabernet, this is a good choice if you&#8217;re looking for something that&#8217;s easy to drink, and will make a good choice as a red wine option during the holiday party season thanks to the price.</p>

<p><strong>Winemaker&#8217;s Notes:</strong>  This Big House Red lives up to that old Fruit Bomb moniker that you&#8217;ve come to expect. It starts with a nose full of blackberries and raspberries, with hints of leather and spices. The palate is clean, exhibiting flavors of cranberries, roses, and a touch of rhubarb. This finish lingers, with flavors of vanilla and a touch of dark cherries in the finish. Pairs well with all grilled meats, lasagna Bolognese, grilled vegetables, or even sashimi grade Ahi tuna.</p>
<p><strong>My Review:  </strong>The previous version of this wine was one of those that I was torn on. I liked what they were trying to do by creating a table wine with a little bit of everything that could then go with a little bit of everything, but I felt that the attempt created a wine that just fell flat. This vintage was different.</p>
<p><span id="more-1533"></span>Now, to preface, I&#8217;m not saying that the 2010 Big House Red is some revolutionary wine, but I did like it better than the previous years bottles I had tried. They&#8217;ve changed the mixture some and I think it&#8217;s for the best. On the nose I got mostly raspberry with a touch of spice and in the mouth I got dark cherry and some cranberry with a juiciness that made me feel like the Zinfandel as much as anything was coming through.</p>
<p>With a dinner of pizza after a trip the grocery store to stock up after the Thanksgiving holiday, a simple bottle of inexpensive red was a welcome sight and I continue to be a proponent of what Big House is doing &#8211; making nice affordable wines that might not set the world on fire, but are certainly welcome after a long day at work.</p>

On the nose, lovely rose petal, violet, and red cherry aromas mingle with complementary scents of smoky vanilla and nutmeg. Very soft and round with good length and richness on the palate, the wine displays supple, silky berry and cherry jam flavors. Enjoy this delectable Pinot Noir with grilled salmon, herb-roasted chicken, baked ham, or lighter pork dishes.</p>
<p><strong>My Review:</strong>  So remember yesterday when I talked about the bottle of 2007 Biltmore Blanc de Blancs exploding all over my kitchen? Well, since my wife and I were making salmon to go with that, and since exploding wine meant I was <em>really</em> going to need a drink, we decided to open up this bottle of 2010 Robert Mondavi Pinot Noir that I had received as a sample.</p>
<p><span id="more-1522"></span>A light to medium red in the glass, with hints of some rust coloring, I got aromas of cherry and spice on the nose which lead into a very smooth, almost juicy wine with flavors of berry and a touch of a cola finish that I&#8217;m finding more and more on Pinot, and that I&#8217;m finding myself enjoying quite a bit.</p>
<p>Paired with the salmon the wines richness was a nice compliment to the fatty fish, making the entire meal just a wonderful, rich experience. For the price this was a surprisingly robust Pinot Noir, and if you&#8217;re looking for a budget wine to put out with your Thanksgiving dinner, this is certainly a good choice.</p>

<p><strong>Winemaker&#8217;s Notes:</strong>  With its maritime influence, California&#8217;s Monterey region has an extended growing season that yields wines with full flavor development and great acid balance. Mandolin Syrah has a dense core of blueberry and blackberry fruit, supported by layers of spice and rich vanilla tones.</p>
<p><strong>My Review:</strong>   Last month I was impressed by the <a title="2009 Mandolin Cabernet Sauvignon" href="http://www.thegoodwineguru.com/mandolin-cabernet-sauvignon-2009/" target="_blank">2009 Mandolin Cabernet Sauvignon</a>, so when I decided to open up the Syrah last night I had if not high expectations, at least expectations to not be let down. The wine lived up to that&#8230;sorta.</p>
<p><span id="more-1501"></span>A good purple in the glass, I got aromas of spice and blackberry on the nose. In the mouth blueberry and spice were most dominant, with a touch of vanilla on the finish that I almost had to look for. With a dinner of steak, crab legs, and asparagus (oppulence, I has it), the wine was serviceable, but didn&#8217;t do anything to either bring out or counter flavors in the food.</p>
<p>The wine wasn&#8217;t &#8220;bad&#8221;, but neither was it something that I would go out of my way to pick up again. Maybe I had too high of hopes for it because I&#8217;d enjoyed the Cabernet so much, but the 2009 Syrah from Mandolin was just meh &#8211; nothing to brag about, but nothing to really complain about either.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t know that I would necessarily dissuade somebody from getting it for a party or as a different deck wine, but if you&#8217;re looking for a Syrah to really knock your socks off, this isn&#8217;t it. <p><strong>My Review:</strong>  Around this time of year I start getting samples offered with Thanksgiving and Christmas not too far away. I have to say that this is the first year of writing this website that I was offered a sample for Halloween. I&#8217;d seen the various bottles of wine on shelves that were obviously trying to appeal either to the Halloween drinking crowd or goth kids too stupid to buy something that didn&#8217;t have a vampire or other creature of the night, but I&#8217;d never picked one up myself, so when I was offered a sample of the 2009 Apothic Red with Halloween coming up, I was interested since I&#8217;ve never really done a Halloween feature on here.</p>
<p><span id="more-1498"></span>First of all, a talk about themed wines &#8211; in general, I don&#8217;t buy into them. That&#8217;s not to say that I don&#8217;t appreciate a cleverly named or labelled bottle that is appropriate for a specific event, but when planning my wine offerings for an event, I try not to limit myself to what&#8217;s on the label and more to what&#8217;s in the bottle to make sure it suits what food is out and also the crowd that will be drinking it.</p>
<p>Now, all of that being said, if I was going to put out a themed bottle of wine for a Halloween party, I could do a lot worse than the 2009 Apothic Red. Nice and dark and purple in the glass with aromas of berry and a touch of spice, in the mouth I got mostly dark, juicy fruit and a cola finish that was smooth. Like really smooth. Like this may be the smoothest finish to a wine I&#8217;ve ever  had.</p>
<p>This wine was incredibly easy to drink, and will appeal to most palates in a non-critical wine drinking environment (read: drinking without paying much attention to what you&#8217;re drinking). There&#8217;s nothing particularly fancy about the wine, but I didn&#8217;t find it disappointing in any way, and it went well enough with a couple of frozen pizzas that my wife and I cooked up, something I imagine would be offered up at Halloween parties this weekend.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a themed bottle of wine to put out for your Halloween party, I can honestly say I&#8217;d go with this one. <p>This past Thursday I, along with some family and friends, got to engage in the most recent iteration of the Wines of Chile Virtual Blogger Tasting. The theme this time was Carmenere &amp; Curry, and when I got the invite I was intrigued as I&#8217;ve enjoyed Carmenere since the first Blogger Tasting I was invited to and my wife and I have increasingly enjoyed curry and while we&#8217;ve never combined them I had read that they did pair well.</p>
<p>As usual, the kit included 8 bottles of wine along with a wealth of information both about the wines and the regions, along with some spices for making curry dishes and a USB thumb drive loaded with recipes and even more information about the winemakers and the vineyards. If there&#8217;s one thing I can continue to say about this tasting as that there&#8217;s no lack of information, something that I greatly appreciate. As for the wines.</p>
<p><strong><span id="more-1476"></span>2010 Emiliana Natura Carmenere ($17)</strong></p>
<p>Our first wine of the night was a deep ruby in color and I got aromas of pepper, dark chocolate, pepper, and brambles. In the mouth the wine was dry with pepper, some cherry, and some of the bramble from the nose with a bit of a tart finish to it. This was my wife and my mother&#8217;s favorite wine of the night and didn&#8217;t last long after the formal part of the tasting was finished.</p>
<p><strong>2008 Casa Silva Los Lingues Gran Reserva Carmenere ($22)</strong></p>
<p>The second wine featured dark fruit and some of the same bramble from the first on the nose. In the mouth the wine was dry with bell pepper, bramble, and a touch of tobacco. I personally liked this wine better than the first even though they had some similar flavors.</p>
<p><strong>2008 Santa Rita Medella Real Gran Reserva Carmenere ($20)</strong></p>
<p>The third wine had a ton of dark fruit on the nose with some spice. I got some dark chocolate and plum on the nose, though not as much as some of the others tasting with me. In the mouth the wine displayed a subtle pepper with smooth chocolate and dark fruit. It was a stark departure from the first two wines with more fruit on less pepper than they featured.</p>
<p><strong>2008 Montes Alpha Carmenere ($24)</strong></p>
<p>Our fourth wine had a nose that I could only describe as musty at first, though after it opened up I did pick up some dark fruit and spice. In the mouth I got dark cherry with some dark chocolate and plum and a soft oak finish.</p>
<p><strong>2009 Carmen Gran Reserva Carmenere ($17)</strong></p>
<p>The fifth wine had spice and black fruit on the nose that struck me as juicy though a little bramble came out later as the wine opened up. On the palate the juiciness from the nose came up again with just a touch of pepper and some smokey fruit.</p>
<p><strong>2009 Santa Carolina Reserva de Familia Carmenere ($20)</strong></p>
<p>The sixth wine had a nose of black fruit and spice with a hint of dried herbs. In the mouth the wine was smooth but with what I could only describe as a &#8220;footy&#8217; finish, though others described it as a dark almond finish which sounds far better than how I phrased it.</p>
<p><strong>2009 Concha y Toro Marques de Casa Concha Carmenere ($20)</strong></p>
<p>Our next to last wine had black currant and a touch of chocolate nose. In the mouth it was medium dry with some pepper and cherry and a dark chocolate note on the finish. I wasn&#8217;t in love with this wine at first, but later in the evening after it had time to open up I found it more enjoyable.</p>
<p><strong>2007 Haras de Pirque Cabernet Sauvignon/Carmenere ($13)</strong></p>
<p>The only blend of the evening, the blend was:  40% Cabernet Sauvignon; 37$ Carmenere; 13% Cabernet Franc; 10% Syrah. On the nose I got earth with stone and flint and just a hint of dark fruit. In the mouth the wine featured pepper, tobacco, some fruit, and more of the earth and stone notes from the nose. It wasn&#8217;t a favorite of mine personally, though others that had let the wine open up more than myself did say it was the best value, and it was a bit more enjoyable to me later in the night when it had opened up a bit.</p>
<p><strong>Wrap-Up</strong></p>
<p>So, the usual question to these tastings is &#8220;which was your favorite&#8221;? If I was forced to pick one it would probably be the 2008 Casa Silva Los Lingues Gran Reserva Carmenere. That being said, I did enjoy the 2009 Concha y Toro later after it had some time to open up. As the theme of the tasting was Carmenere &amp; Curry we (meaning my wife) made a point of making some curry to taste the food with. We made the beef curry dish that we had been sent a recipe for and while it wasn&#8217;t a perfect pairing with every one of the wines, it was tasty and did pair well with some of them, so you can count me as a believer in pairing Carmenere with curry.</p>
<p>This probably wasn&#8217;t my favorite of the Wine of Chile tastings I&#8217;ve done (the last one, Pinot Noir &amp; Syrah, holds that title), though it also probably wasn&#8217;t my least favorite. I think I would have enjoyed the wines, the back four in particular, had I opened them all up well ahead of time to give them lots of time to breathe, something I plan to do for the next one.</p>
<p>As always I want to thank both the vineyards of Chile, the winemakers, and The Thomas Collective for putting on what is easily one of the most original and entertaining tastings that I get to participate in. I always look forward to these tastings as they are informative and and a great way to try new wines.</p>

<p><strong>My Review:</strong>  More Syrah? Yep, that&#8217;s really happening. Another night without the wife being home meant another steak found its fate on my grill, which called for another bottle of big red wine. The Slammer Syrah from Big House had been looking at me funny for a few weeks, so I decided to give in and twist open its screwcap to see what all was going on in there.</p>
<p><span id="more-1462"></span>A hint of purple was present in the glass, though not as much as previous Syrahs I had tried, and on the nose I got blackberry and notes of spice that I was expecting, though that didn&#8217;t make them any less enjoyable. Sipping on the wine brought forward nice juicy cassis notes and a meaty note on the finish that I&#8217;m finding I like more every time I find it.</p>
<p>Paired with my steak it was great, adding a touch of smoke to the grilled meat and the meaty finish going great with the actual meat. I would have liked to try this with some BBQ burgers as I think the tangyness of the sauce would be a great compliment to the wine as well.</p>
<p>Big House has once again offered up a wine that isn&#8217;t ground breaking, but also isn&#8217;t a disappointment. It&#8217;s a great value, and definitely one to look at for these last few days of using the grill before the weather permanently turns cold.</p>

<p><strong>My Review:</strong>  With the wife out of town for a work conference that can mean only one thing &#8211; George is cooking steak and drinking red wine. The grill fired up and a steak cooking away, I pulled out one of my always handy corkscrews (since I have like a dozen of them) and popped open the 2009 Hedges DLD Syrah.</p>
<p><span id="more-1455"></span>The first thing I noticed about the wine was the deep purple color in the glass. On the nose I got aromas of dark fruit and spice, both of which carried over to the palate. That, however, was not what I loved about this wine. Through the fruit and juicy flavors came a note of meat/smoke/bacon that I just loved. By itself it was great, but when paired with a freshly grilled steak, it was sublime.</p>
<p>Even after the steak was gone, the wine continued to be enjoyable, the smoke/meat/bacon note that was so great with the food, subtle enough without it to not make the wine unenjoyable without something to munch on.</p>
<p>For the price this was a great value on a steak wine, and definitely one work checking out, especially if you&#8217;re a fan of Syrah. I appreciated the smooth finish, the good fruit, and the unique meaty note. If you don&#8217;t like meat, this might not be the wine for you.</p>

<p><strong>Winemaker&#8217;s Notes:</strong>  The 2009 Crimson &amp; Clover Conservancy is a velvety blend of signature Livermore varietal. Aromas of currant, clove, and vanilla lead into bright fruit flavors of blackberry on the palate. The spicy finish is soft and long with hints of leather and tobacco. Pairs well with black pepper-crusted filet mignon with goat cheese or grilled artichoke with tarragon aioli.</p>
<p><strong>My Review:</strong>  Given as how during my upcoming trip to San Francisco (we leave tomorrow and this day can&#8217;t end quick enough) I plan to visit Concannon Vineyards, I wanted to try the 2009 Crimson &amp; Clover before heading out to avoid any awkward silences in regards to the bottle of wine sitting lonely at my home back in Virginia.</p>
<p>With Labor Day weekend upon us my wife and I knew we would be grilling, so in between getting laundry done and bags packed for our vacation, we threw a couple of steaks and lobster tails on the grill. Well, rather, we tried to, but then the grill ran out of gas and so we had to finish them inside using the oven. It all still worked out, especially when paired with the wine.</p>
<p><span id="more-1393"></span>In the glass the 2009 Crimson &amp; Clover was dark, though not so dark as to not let light through. On the nose I got a bit of dark fruit and a hint of spice. In the mouth there was an explosion of berry flavor, with juicy blackberry jumping right to the front.</p>
<p>While I didn&#8217;t pick up a ton of spice on the finish, there were hints, and the finish definitely lingers on for a bit, something I enjoy in my red wines. Paired with the steaks and lobster it was a good, with the juicy fruit flavors complimenting the steaks that at least had a little grill flavor to them thanks to at least getting seared before the propane tank ran out.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve yet to have a bad experience with the Concannon wines I&#8217;ve been sent, and part of what continues to attract me to them is that they are quality wines at a great price point. This is a good value wine to enjoy as we wrap up the summer and the grilling season, and is a nice tribute by John Concannon to his father Jim, the &#8220;Father of America&#8217;s First Petite Sirah&#8221;.</p>

<p><strong>Winemaker&#8217;s Notes:</strong>  Flagship wine of the estate, the HFE Red Mountain consistently displays dense color, firm tannins, and well-defined acidity. Always a majority blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, this wine is suitable for drinking upon release, but will reward those with the patience to age it. This wine represents all vineyard blocks farmed within the Hedges Family Estate vineyard portfolio. A true chateau-production bottling, the HFE Red Mountain is the epitome of classic style, and one that represents the Terroir of the Red Mountain AVA in a pure and elegant form.</p>
<p><strong>My Review:</strong>  Oh big red wines, how I enjoy you. A couple of weeks ago the folks over at Hedges Family Estates sent me a sampling of their portfolio to check out, and included in that was two bottles of the 2008 Red Mountain. On my wife&#8217;s recent trip to South Carolina with her parents to visit her brother and his wife I sent one of those bottles with her to share with her brother. Her early report was that it was a steak wine, so the other night we grilled up some steak and lobster tails and popped open the other bottle.</p>
<p><span id="more-1367"></span>I was immediately struck by how dark the wine was. Holding it up to light let pretty much none of it through and the only way I was able to really pick out any streaks of purple were from the small bubbles that resulted from the pouring.</p>
<p>On the nose I got dark fruit which carried through to the palate with just a hint of tobacco/smoke on the finish as well. The finish on this wine was silky smooth, like far smoother than I was expecting and maybe the smoothest finish I&#8217;ve had on a red in a long time. with the dinner of steak, lobster tails, and baked potatoes it was great. The big, bold dark fruits held up great against the grilled steak, but the smooth finish was perfect for the more delicate lobster.</p>
<p>I really enjoyed this wine, and it&#8217;s a great value for such a big wine that will make any steak lover happy.
