2018 Peter Zemmer Pinot Grigo

Variety: 100% Pinot Grigio
Region: DOC Alto Adige, Italy
Cost: $18 (SRP)

Winemaker’s Notes: The rich aroma as well as the excellent acidity makes this wine crisp, rich, and particularly elegant. On the nose elegant notes of flowers blend with typical tones of green apples and spices. On the palate the wine shows melon and pear driven fruit notes in a full-bodied style while maintaining the fresh acidity so commonly associated with the Alto Adige.

My Review: I’ve not only had a very positive experience with wines from Peter Zemmer, but with Pinot Grigio from Alto Adige. That made me look forward to the 2018 Peter Zemmer Pinot Grigio, and I have to say (spoilers!) that it did not disappoint.

In the glass the wine was a pale yellow colour, and on the nose I got aromas of lemon and citrus notes. In the mouth I got flavors of lemon, lime, and a hint of creaminess on the finish; there was more body than I usually associate with Pinot Grigio, but there was still just enough acid and spice to the wine to give it great balance and character.

My wife and I paired the wine with shrimp that we coated in pesto and cooked on a cedar plank on the grill along with some potatoes. The pairing was excellent. The acid of the wine balancing the pesto and shrimp, the creaminess complimenting the flavors.

I really, really liked this wine. For $18 it’s a fantastic value, and one I would pick up at the store for a nice dinner, to share with friends, or because it was Thursday. Peter Zemmer and Alto Adige continue to impress.

Editor’s Note: I received this wine as a free sample for review.
