Variety: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Montevideo, Uruguay
Cost: $16 (SRP)
Winemaker’s Notes: Sauvignon Blanc with vibrant green apple and citrus aromas and herbal notes. It has a light palate and divinely refreshing. This wine is perfectly paired with sushi, sashimi, and fresh fish or it may simply be enjoyed as an appetizer.
My Review: Having a bunch of white wine to taste and try as the temperatures climb up here in North Carolina is quite fortuitous…or the marketing people are quite clever (could be both). Either way, the 2024 Familia Traversa Sauvignon Blanc was perfectly timed to enjoy some warm weather and a new recipe that we found online. Refreshing, crip, and perfect for dinner or sharing with friends–exactly what I want in a wine this time of year.
In the glass the wine was light, nearly translucent, with just hints of yellow that caught the light. On the nose I got citrus notes, green apple, a bit of lemongrass, and some dried herbs, mostly rosemary. It smelled like spring in a citrus grove.
In the mouth, the wine was crisp but blessedly had a light acidity. Too often with Sauvignon Blanc the acidity is, while refreshing, overwhelming and washes out any of the other flavors or experience of the wine; that was not the case here. I got flavors of wet stone, herbs, and lime, well balanced, with the lime leading the way before giving way to the mineral and herb flavors.
We paired the wine with “bang bang salmon”–diced and crisped up salmon seasoned with spice and served over some cauliflower fried rice. The seasonings pulled out the citrus of the wine even more, while the crispness of the wine was a good balance to the heat and richness of the salmon.
We both liked this wine a lot. In particular, I loved how balanced the acidity was. And, at $16, this is an absolute steal for the summer months. Grab a bottle (grab a few at this price) and share it with friends, enjoy with seafood, and prepare for the heat that’s coming.
Disclosure: I received this wine as free sample for review.
